The Wheeler/Lockhart Story
We spent an awesome day working on Christina Lockhart’s house. Christina is a single mom who recently purchased a house and is raising six kids. She has three of her own and has become the mom to three others. She has a heart that seems to know no boundaries when it comes to loving kids. It felt great to help her get some things taken care of that would normally be done if a man was around the house!
Before we got there, she had a few kids living in an unfinished room above the garage. With help from some skilled men, from a community group at church, we framed, hung drywall, floored, and painted the room. We also painted bathrooms, re-carpeted her bedroom, and had the rest of the carpets cleaned. On the outside, we removed four dead trees, trimmed the bushes in her yard, mowed, and landscaped her flower beds. Not bad for a Saturday!
The fundraising part of the project was to help Chris and Lindsey Wheeler, who have adopted a little girl, Eliana, from Guatemala. Their expenses were higher than most adoptions because Lindsey had to live in Guatemala for 12 weeks with Eliana before the adoption could be complete. On top of the normal adoption expenses, they literally had to maintain two households.
The whole experience was rewarding because it gave us a chance to serve a single mom and help an orphan, and spend the day sweating, laughing, and working with a great team of believers. Thank you for co-laboring with us, either in prayer or with your checkbook, on behalf of these two families!
Below is a letter we received from Christina.
Although words cannot begin to express my emotions, I will do my best to convey the gratitude that I feel regarding the overwhelming amount of generosity and compassion that was shown to my family. “The one truly vivid thought is that God wanted me to see the beauty in the jewels that he has so he shared you all with me for a little while.” “I feel as though God opened up his treasure box and chose his most precious jewels creating a very special group of people to lend to me.” I am not one to accept handouts or charity therefore I was somewhat reluctant and as my sister would say, “I was trying to give my blessings away.” Deep down I knew that I would need help. Little did I know that the Both Hands team had so much more in store for me.
They were awesome. I feel as though I had been friends with each of them forever. Their hearts were so full of love, and unwavering faith. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
